Moving to Switzerland - Finding Accommodation

Given the shortage of housing on the Swiss market, it is sometimes difficult to find accommodation, especially in towns. You are therefore advised to start looking as soon as possible. Remember too that rents in Switzerland are relatively high compared with those in most other European countries. For example, the average rent for a three-room apartment in 2007 was 1,086 Swiss francs (CHF), or around EUR 690. Note in addition that rents are usually lower in the country than in towns.

Since renting is quite costly in the long term, EU nationals living in Switzerland may alternatively choose to buy an apartment or a house. To obtain a home loan, however, you must put down at least 20% of the price from your own resources. Residential property for sale can be found through the same media as rented accommodation (newspapers, websites or estate agents).
