Finding a School
To find a place for your child at school, whether at nursery school (pre-school) or in the compulsory primary or secondary level I schooling system, you should preferably contact the local authority of your municipality or apply to the relevant school direct. In the latter case, you should if possible take with you a residence permit and a health insurance certificate for your child. Where children do not speak the language of your canton of residence, it is best to enrol them in an integration class, to improve their language skills before they join the standard educational system (for more information, see the Swiss education information platform EDUCA).

Useful information on tertiary education (university-level schools and universities) is available on the website of the Rectors’ Conference of the Swiss Universities (CRUS). Admission criteria for tertiary education in Switzerland are very strict and university studies are generally quite expensive. Grants are sometimes available. Relevant information can be obtained from the Federal Commission for Foreign Student Grants (+41 (0)31 323 26 76).

Children can also be enrolled at an international school or a private school. For the former, you can contact your diplomatic representation in Switzerland. For the latter, we advise you to visit the website of the Swiss Federation of Private Schools.
