Festivals & Events in Zürich, Basel, Bern, Lucerne & Zug

Zurich has a full calendar of festivals throughout the year. Here you will find information and a description of the events with links to their websites where available.

The region of Zürich hosts numerous festivals throughout the year. The wide range of events includes historical commemorations, music festivals and concerts and trade fairs. Find out here about the principle events on the annual calendar.

Sechseläuten: Spring holiday celebration in Zürich on the third Sunday in April. Festivities include a parade throughout the city on the Sunday with children dressed in traditional costume, and a procession through the streets on the Monday. Each commune organises its own parade and festivities. The highlight of the event is the burning of the Böögg snowman, the symbol of winter, to welcome the new season.

Zürich Festival (Zürcher Festspiele): Annual festival taking place in June and July and combining art, opera, drama, concerts and dance. Events take place at several locations and also feature a number of open-air performances.

Caliente: Festival of Latin-American music and culture, held every July. The aim is not only to overcome prejudice to the Latin-American population of Switzerland but also to raise funds for the Amazon region. The event takes place on the Helviaplatz and showcases famous Latin musicians, Latin-American specialities, art exhibitions and dancing. 

Dörfli-Fäscht: Multicultural festival in August featuring live music, culinary specialities and artistic performances. The events take place in the old town of Zürich, Niederdorf.

Street Parade: Annual one day parade with electronic and techno music throughout the City. Festivities begin early afternoon and continue until midnight.

Swiss Teddy Festival: Annual teddy bear festival suitable for all the family as well as collectors and creators. It features hundreds of teddy bears, workshops, interactive activities and exhibitions. The event takes place at the Schützenhaus Albisgütli in August.

Zürich Limmat Swimming Race (Limmat Schwimmen): Race open to professional and amateur swimmers. Participants make their way across the city from the Stadthausquai to the Oberer Letten river bath. The two kilometre race usually takes place at the end of August.

Weltklasse Zürich: Athletics meeting, part of the Golden League Athletics series, taking place at the end of August. Since 1928, top athletes from around the world have participated in this event at the Letzigrund Stadium.

Knabenschiessen: One of Switzerland's oldest festivals dating back to the 17th century. Thousands of boys and girls aged 12 to 16 participate in a marksmanship competition with the aim of winning the title King of the Marksmen. Annually in September.

Zürich Film Festival: The festival takes place September and October for eleven days and aims to promote and discover up-and-coming documentary and feature fiction filmmakers. 

Zürich Silvesterlauf: Every year in December thousands of participants join in this traditional race through the old town of Zürich and along the Bahnhofstrasse over a distance of between 1.4 Km and 9.8 Km.
