Hunting is authorised in Switzerland as a way of keeping the population of game animals under control and minimising the damage caused by wild animals.
There are two different hunting regimes/schemes in Switzerland, the Patentjagd and the Revierjagd. The Patentjagd allows those who have permission to hunt and have paid a fee to hunt on the whole area of the canton. The number of animals which a hunter is allowed to kill is limited. Hunting is only permitted during a few weeks in the autumn. The Revierjagd is organised by the political communities. They make contracts with different groups of hunters for a defined period (usually eight years).
Hunting RegulationsThe Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) is responsible for federal legislation with regard to hunting.
Hunting is regulated on a local level with each canton having the power to issue its own laws. The canton also determines the open dates for the hunting season.
Hunting PermitsAll hunters must have a hunting permit/licence issued by the cantonal authorities. The type of licence available and the price varies between the cantons. In order to qualify for a licence, applicants must be over the age of 20, pass a test and fulfill a range of conditions.
