Tourist AttractionsZürichLake Zürich (Zürichsee): The lake's waterfront provides several places for swimming and relaxing and the Strandbad Mythenquai even has a sandy beach. Sightseeing cruises operate on Zürich's and along the Limmat river. Sihltal Zurich Uetliberg Bahn: This railway (accessible from Zürich's main station) has regular services to the countryside in the Zürich region, making it easy to leave the city for a day. Popular areas include the Sihlwald forest and the cable car ride up the Albis ridge mountain peak to Felsenegg. Lindt and Sprüngli Chocolate Factory (Schokoladefabrik Lindt and Sprüngli): Visitors can find out more about the origins of chocolate and get to taste it at the factory of local chocolate maker, Sprüngli.
Urania Observatory (Sternwarte Urania): Home of Zürich's tallest bar, the 48m tower provides panoramic views of the city and the lake. Visitors can observe the stars and planets through the giant telescope, when the weather is clear. Note that the observatory is closed when the weather is bad.
Zürich Zoo and Zoological Gardens (Zürich Zoologischer Garten): Popular family attraction with over 300 animal species, many of which are rare and endangered. The gardens are divided into different zones including the Masoala Rainforest, the Africa house and the lion enclosure.
BaselBasel Old Town: The historic old town is home to buildings dating back to the 15th Century as well as modern buildings by internationally renowned architects. The impressive Town Hall (Rathaus), market place (Marktplatz), and Cathedral can all be found in the old town. Scala Theatre: This theatre, renovated in 1999, hosts many concerts, exhibitions and conferences and provides spectacular views from its rooftops.
BerneMünster Cathedral: An example of late Gothic architecture, and Switzerland's largest ecclesiastical building, the cathedral features a spire measuring 100m. For a fee it is possible to climb to the top for a view across the city. Bundeshaus (Houses of Parliament): The building with a stained-glass dome is home to the Swiss Federal assembly. Guided tours of the Bundeshaus are available when the parliament is actually in recess. From the public gallery visitors can observe parliamentary sessions from a distance. House of Einstein (Einstein-Haus): This three roomed apartment is the place where in 1905, Nobel prize winning scientist Albert Einstein (1879-1955) developed his legendary theory of relativity. The Clock Tower (Zeitglockenturm): One of Berne's most important sites, this astronomical clock was built in 1530 and used to be the city's main clock. Bear Pits & Park (Bärengraben): The land mark of Berne, the bear pit, can be visited daily. According to some legends the founder of Berne, Berchtold V von Zähringen, killed a bear, thus giving the name of Bern to the city (from the German, Bär). LucerneChapel Bridge (Kappellbrücke): The Kappellbrücke is a covered wooden bridge across the Reuss river. The bridge was built in the 14th century and paintings representing Swiss and local history were added in the 17th Century. The bridge was completely rebuilt after a fire in 1994. Mount Pilatus: The top of Pilatus can be accessed via the Pilatus Railway, the world’s steepest cogwheel railway. A popular route for tourists is to take the boat across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad, then the cogwheel railway and come back down on the aerial cableways and panorama gondolas. ZugLake Zug (Zugersee): Visitors can view the Rigi, Pilatus and the Bernese Alps (Eiger, Mönch und Jungfrau) from the Lake Zug waterfront.
