Visiting Museums & Monuments in Zürich & Lucerne

Art, archeology, history, literature... Find out how to make the most of the museums in Zurich, Zug, Berne, Basel and Lucerne using discount tickets and vouchers.

In German-speaking Switzerland there are a number of museums as well as a large number of art galleries representing art, archaeology, local history, crafts, and cultural heritage. Zürich itself has over 30 private and public museums. Opening hours can vary.

Museum Passes

The Swiss Museum Passport (Schweizer Museumspass) entitles holders to free entrance to over 440 museums in Switzerland. The pass is sold at participating museums, tourist offices and online.

The ZürichCARD entitles holders to unlimited travel on the Zürich public transport system which covers the entire city and includes one journey to the airport. The card can be purchased with a validity period of 24 or 72 hours and it also entitles the holder to free entrance to 37 museums in the region and discounts on some attractions in the city.

The LucerneCard provides unlimited travel on public transportation in the city of Lucerne and surrounding areas (excluding SGV boat rides). 

The LucerneCard also entitles holders to discounts on admission to museums, golf courses and different tourist attractions in the region. The card can be purchased at the Tourist Office or from the ticket counter at the main Lucerne railway station.

Museums in Zürich

There are a great number of museums in the region, here are just a few.

Fine Arts Museum (Kunsthaus Zürich): Home to one of the most impressive 19th and 20th century art collections in Europe, the museum also include paintings and sculptures dating back to antiquity. Works by Chagall, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Chagall, Giacometti, Rodin, Degas and Monet are on display.

Swiss National Museum (Schweizerisches Landesmuseum): The museum retraces the history of the Confederation from prehistoric times to the 21st century. Objects on display include weapons, wooden sculptures and hundreds of cultural artefacts.

Zürich Tram Museum (Tram-Museum Zürich): Switzerland's only tram museum with original cars exhibited in the historic depot of Burgwies. There is a museum line along the Bahnhofstrasse and Limmatquai to Burgwies, with rolling stock from the collection of the museum.

Mill Museum (Muehlerama): The centrepiece of the museum is the historic, industrial mill which was built in 1913 and is in operation daily. The temporary and permanent exhibitions highlight the evolution of techniques over the years.

Fondation Beyeler: The Foundation houses one of the most famous private collections in the world featuring international modern and contemporary art. The permanent collection includes works by van Gogh, Klee, Miró, Bacon, Ernst, Rodin, Kandinsky, Rousseau and many others.
