With approximately 60,000 drawings as well as 250,000 individual prints and books with original illustrations, the Kupferstichkabi­nett at the Kunstmuseum Basel belongs among the most important collections of this kind. Frans II. Francken (1581 – 1642) was a member a the famous artist family who was the centre of Antwerp paintings for several generations. 2004 an important painting of this artist was bequeathed to the Kunstmuseum Basel. The exhibition places this restored masterpiece in the context of other surprising paintings of the artist. The themes of his paintings are joyful and therefore always loved by art collectors. The Theater Basel starts the ballet season with Crescendi, a ballet evening in three parts. There are three choreographies by Rami Be'er, Johan Inger and Richard Wherlock. In two exhibitions running simultaneously, the Prints and Drawings Department of the Swiss National Library, Bern, and Schaffhausen’s Museum zu Allerheiligen present the abundant oeuvre of Swiss artist Ulrich Meister. Bern will begin with a selection of works on paper, while Schaffhausen puts Meister’s drawings on show. Treasures from Ancient Gandhara, Pakistan In 2001 the monumental statues of the Buddha at Bamiyan in Afghanistan – once proud witnesses of Gandharan culture – were dynamited and destroyed. But this exhibition, for which Pakistani museums have loaned their treasures to the West for the first time, shows another side of this region: Gandhara’s past is full of riches, tolerance and cultural diversity. The Kunsthaus Zürich presents work by one of the fathers of modern art, Georges Seurat. He was a colleague of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh’s, Seurat. He started to paint in a pointilistic manner, that means he painted his paintings with millions of little dots. In this way he brought a scientific precision into Impressionist painting.
